“Preacher & Prayer”
by E. M. Bounds
About a month ago, one of my good friends handed me a book to read. This is significant because this was a friend that I am constantly giving books to and encouraging to read more. So, when he gave me a book, I put it at the top of my reading list for this new year. Being a book lover, I wanted to know everything that I could about this book. The author is one that I have read before, E. M. Bounds. He is considered by many to be an expert about prayer. This was enough to spur me onto reading it. My copy is a 128-page hardback with really big font (at least 16). The publishing company is one that I had never heard of, Christian Witness, and there is no date of the printing. Upon internet research, most books that show to be published by them were printed before 1930. It certainly could be 100 years old.
My copy does not have any chapter titles. This became a challenge for me to remember what I had read, so I created my own! The friend that gave me the copy had chapter titles, so I had him send me a picture of them. In the front of my copy, I wrote those out to see how close I was in my naming. To be honest, I missed the mark a few times, but overall, I was on point. This work on prayer was geared to the preacher. There were several places that convicted me to my core, and I will share a few of those here.
“A desire for God which cannot break the chains of sleep is a weak thing and will do but little for God after it has indulged itself fully.”
“The praying ones are to the preacher as Aaron and Hur were to Moses”
“...nothing is too hard for God to do if He can get the right kind of a man to do it.”
The author opened each paragraph with quotes from great men of prayer such as Robert Murray McCheyne, David Brainerd, Surgeon, and Wesley. This quote from Wesley stood out to me. “Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God, and I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen; such alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the kingdom of heaven on earth. God does nothing but in answer to prayer.”
As far as recommendations are concerned: put on your steel toed boots before reading. This book is brief in words but packs a big punch in content. Prepare to be challenged to take your prayer life to an entire new level. Leaders of every type should read this book on a regular basis. If you cannot find a hard copy, I am including a link to a free pdf that I found. Happy reading!
